Raleigh, North Carolina, USA,.- In 2003, by decision of the State Sports Committee, sambo was officially recognized as a national and sporting priority in Russia.
On July 20, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) granted full recognition to the International Sambo Federation (FIAS), which is already looking to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games to include this sport originating in the USSR in the program.
This meant a great joy for those who, with tenness and effort, have been training for many years in this discipline of «Self-Defense Without Weapons».
The world celebrates that a new sport enters the Olympic programming.
And in North Carolina, the same path is being traveled, but now it is the turn of Kurash, a martial art with 2000 to 2500 years of history and has seeds sown in this state by coaches and high-performance athletes, with Hispanic origins.
«We are confident that Kurash will be accepted at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and many young Hispanics living in North Carolina have not stopped preparing, with a view to these Olympics,» said Julian Abreu, who in addition to being president of the Dominican Raleigh Association (ADORA), is a Panamerican judo champion.
The USA Kurash Federation was born in North Carolina and has promoted Hispanic coaches and athletes dedicated to this discipline – similar to judo, but not fought on the ground – to participate in Panamerican, Central American and Asian events.
«Recently, we participated in the Kurash Pan American in the Dominican Republic and won a silver medal. Our young people are still preparing to participate in the Panamerican Kurash Championships, to be held in November, in the Dominican Republic. We will give the best in conventional and beach Kurash, «said Julián Abreu excitedly.
The insertion of this sport was born in a South American training of the Panamerican Kurash Union (UPK) within the framework of the Panamerican Judo games in 2013 in the Dominican Republic.
While it is true that Uzbekistan is the cradle of this sport, it is also true that the Dominican Republic is the mecca of the movement of its consolidation in American territory. Hence, Latinos feel so proud to practice it and value the philosophy that surrounds it.
Abreu, along with the USA Kurash Federation, is promoting that this martial art is included within the new sports incorporated into the Olympic Games.
«We have already sent an application to the United States Olympic Committee and the athletes who will represent the state and our countries will be of Hispanic origin,» said Enthusiastic Abreu, knowing that he is the bearer of this good news that keeps many Latino families hopeful about how far their children can go, if this discipline is accepted and officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee.
The young people who are training and competing are 13 years old and older.
There are also groups of adult Hispanic athletes receiving continuous training and participating in international events.
«We are working with young people, on a 6-7 year old project, to prepare them with enough time. They will be ready for the Olympic Games,» said the social leader and recognized Pan American judoka.
